Female German Politician Suggests Marriage License To Expire

There is a new link at Sheep to Wolves that goes to an article that talks about a suggestion that after 7 years that the couple can decide to extend their marriage or it should be dissolved automatically.  This is actually quite logical.  Most licenses have to be renewed.  We give people a marriage license though it is actually a contract.

It is quite an odd mix.  A contract with a license.  You have business licenses but they are not in the way of forming a corporation.  On top of that marriage is so much easier to create than to dissolve.  That seems to be a silly thing.

To me it sounds like trying to force a computer to upgrade beyond it’s design.  We have integrated the religious side of marriage with law that has changed over time and expectations that have changed.

As damaging as a failed marriage can be, shouldn’t there be a waiting period just like there is for guns?  Here is my proposal.

Marriage is a corporation.   Marriage involves a license.   So there should be a legal waiting period.  Just like there is for guns and immiagration.  You can’t really set up classes because no one knows for sure what makes marriages work or not.  Catholic churches have classes but it doesn’t effect much in my opinion.

Once you pass the waiting period, you figure up your assets and come up with a prenuptial agreement.  Don’t gasp.  When someone gets married they sign a prenuptial agreement which is whatever the state they live in dictates.  Then the license would expire in 5 years where they can validate it or let it expire.

If marriage is NOT about the contract or license then there is nothing to cause a complaint.  If it is about the the contract then this is how it should be dealt with.

So if the renewal was $35 this would increase some tax revenues and there would be parties and get togethers for the renewal which would spur the economy.  If you are still not on board with this think of the people who renew their vows later in life.  This is something special for them.  Wouldn’t this give people true knowledge and security that their partner is in love with them?
